Rare 19th-century Victorian black lacquered papier-mâché serving basket / tray featuring genuine iridescent mother-of-pearl inlay and hand-painted gilt scrollwork. The center scene depicts a classical Chinoiserie landscape with figures by a waterside pavilion, detailed with natural shell inlay. Fitted with an ornate cast brass / bronze swing handle featuring entwined serpent / snake heads forming a knot at the grip, mounted on figural acanthus leaf brackets. Period: 19th Century (Victorian era, circa 1860–1880) Material: Black lacquered papier-mâché / pressed composite, natural Mother of Pearl (nacre) shell inlay, cast brass/bronze handle Design: Scalloped rim, Chinoiserie figurative waterside scene, ornate gilt borders Handle: High-relief entwined snake / serpent brass swing handle Condition: Fair antique condition with authentic age character. Retains fine original craquelure to the lacquer and shell inlay. Please note there are historic chips / losses to the lacquer along the back edge/rim (clearly shown in photos), typical for papier-mâché of this age. Handle is strong and securely attached.
