Fall Protection Systems — Summary
These systems protect workers who work at heights. OSHA requires them at 6 feet or higher in construction.
They do two things:
1.
Prevent a fall
2.
Stop a fall safely before the worker hits the ground
Three types:
•
Guardrails — rails around the edge
•
Safety nets — nets below the work area
•
Personal Fall Arrest System (PFAS) — the harness system
The harness system has 3 parts:
•
Anchorage — the strong point you tie off to (holds 5,000 lbs)
•
Harness — the straps you wear on your body
•
Connector — the lanyard or retractable line that connects you to the anchor and stops the fall
Simple idea: the anchor holds, the connector stops the fall, and the harness protects your body.
