It is handmade from the spongy inner pith of the Aeschynomene aspera plant. It is frequently used in bowl fillers and as a chewable pet toy. Whole Slit Orange, Bottom right: The orange-brown sphere with vertical cuts carved through the rind is a naturally dried slit orange. These are baked or air-dried for holiday decorations and spiced potpourri blends. Mamey Sapote, Gourd Pods, Left and background: The large, smooth, matte tan/brown structures resemble dried wild gourds or dried fruit shells like Mamey Sapote.
