Beautifully framed antique copper-engraved world map titled: Mappe Monde ou Description du Globe Terrestre assujettie aux Observations Astronomiques Par le S.r Janvier Geographe Published in Venice by François Santini (Chez M. Remondini), circa 1776–1784. From Santini’s Atlas Universel. This is a large, highly decorative double-hemisphere map of the world, engraved on copper and finished with period hand-coloring. The elaborate Baroque-style title cartouche is richly ornamented with allegorical figures, scientific instruments, flags, and foliage. The map reflects late-18th-century geographical knowledge, including explorer tracks and the still-incomplete coastlines of Australia, New Zealand, and the northwest coast of North America.
