This dresser goes way back, circa 1890-1915, to the turn-of-the-century Late Victorian period. I shouldn’t need to say that this is made entirely of real wood, but, of course, it is. This is one of the oldest dressers that I’ve listed. There is no maker stamp, but based on the estate in which this was acquired (in Elmsdale NS) this was very likely produced either in the Canadian maritimes or in Ontario. People would often order these from Sears or Eaton catalogues, and way back then this would have been a desirable piece for a middle class household.
Excellent and rare condition for its vintage. The drawers look as if they hadn’t been used during the past couple centuries. Not much noticeable wear. Drawers retract with ease.
The drawer pulls (handles) are in perfect order with all their pieces intact, also with no notable signs of wear, which is very unusual for this vintage. Pressed lightweight brass handles are a giveaway to the era in which this was manufactured. This style of drawer pull was specifically mass produced between 1800 and 1920.
The styling is representative of the late Victorian (referred as Victorian Cottage) or possibly was included in the Golden Oak era (in which Tiger Oak dressers also gained popularity). This dresser features a painted faux grain in a truly unique and fantastic pattern, not be confused with quarter sawn oak, which would be separately fantastic. The artisanal painted grain on this dresser is in “Cottage Grain Painted” styling.
The mirror features scroll style adornments. The mirror fits in a groove and has 2 screws to hold it securely from the rear.
Compare your options: You can find similar dressers in this grade priced near $1300 USD or higher from stores such as Etsy.
Dressers like these don’t come around very often, let alone in this particular condition, so it seems fair to call this generally rare. Very sturdy, smoke-free / pet-free with no discernible odours.
Delivery is included in the price, available throughout HRM.
Delivery includes a “right to refuse on delivery” policy. You are encouraged to inspect / try out the dresser on delivery to confirm that it meets the description and would be to your satisfaction.
