Erzgebirge" means "Ore Mountains" in German, referring to the mountain range on the border between Germany and the Czech Republic. The name comes from the rich deposits of minerals and metals, such as silver and tin, that were heavily mined there for centuries. The mountains have a long history of mining, which shaped the region's culture and economy. When mining declined, many people turned to other crafts, particularly woodcarving and toy making, which became a famous tradition for which the region is still known today.
