A massive and historically important two-volume Holy Bible commentary set, published by Virtue & Co., London & New York, mid-19th century. These deluxe folio Bibles were among the earliest commentary editions distributed in Canada during the Confederation era (1867+), sold by subscription and treasured as family heirlooms.
Oversized folio format: approx. 15" tall × 11" wide × 5.5" combined spine width
Full Victorian embossed leather bindings with gilt page edges, ornate tooling, and raised bands
Illustrated with dozens of full-page steel engravings by major artists of the era (John Martin, Goodall, Corbould, etc.)
Family record pages included for births, marriages, and deaths
Volume I: Genesis–Esther (thicker)
Volume II: Job–Revelation (slimmer)
Condition: Both volumes complete with plates and text intact. Leather shows age wear and cracking; bindings are pulling away on the inside and would benefit from professional re-gluing/restoration due to the heavy weight of the books. Engravings remain bright.
Historical Significance
These monumental editions by Virtue were often the centerpiece of Canadian Protestant households in the late 19th century. Very few matched 2-volume sets survive intact today, making this a rare opportunity to own a piece of Canadian religious and publishing history.
