Bumblebee jasper (also known as Bumble Bee stone or Fumarole jasper) is a vibrant, rare, and eye-catching volcanic rock from Indonesia. It is not a true jasper (which is a type of quartz) but rather a unique mixture of volcanic matter, anhydrite, sulfur, arsenic, and hematite that is mostly composed of calcite.
Key Characteristics
Appearance Its name comes from its distinct, swirling bands of vibrant yellow, orange, and black, which resemble a bumblebee's coloration. The yellow color is due to the presence of sulfur, while the orange hues come from realgar and orpiment (arsenic sulfide minerals), and the black/grey banding is caused by pyrite, hematite, and manganese oxides.
Origin The material was first discovered in the 1990s and is found exclusively in the fumarole vents of Mount Papandayan, an active volcano in West Java, Indonesia.
