About the Species:
Korean Boxwood is a cold hardy, slow growing evergreen with naturally tight internodes and small leaves, ideal traits for refined bonsai. It tolerates pruning extremely well and develops dense pads with consistent training. Older horticultural name Buxus microphylla var. koreana.
Care Instructions:
Light: Full sun to partial shade. Outdoors only; not suitable as an indoor bonsai.
Watering: Keep soil evenly moist; do not allow to fully dry out. Water deeply until it drains from the bottom. Avoid waterlogging.
Growth & Training: Responds very well to pruning — encourages dense foliage pads. Structural pruning is best done in late spring or mid summer. Wiring can be done year round on lignified branches. Pinch new growth to maintain shape.
Feeding: Use a balanced fertilizer during the growing season. Reduce feeding in late summer to prepare for winter.
Winter Care: Fully hardy outdoors in Canada. Protect from extreme wind or freeze thaw cycles if in a small pot.
