Alabaster is a soft, translucent rock that has been valued since ancient times for its beauty and ease of carving into sculptures and other ornamental objects. Composition: Alabaster typically refers to two different minerals: Gypsum Alabaster: The modern form, composed of calcium sulfate dihydrate. It is very soft and can be scratched with a fingernail (Mohs hardness of 1.5 to 2). Calcite Alabaster: The "Oriental" or "Egyptian" alabaster of the ancients, which is a form of banded travertine (calcium carbonate). It is slightly harder than gypsum alabaster, but can still be scratched with a knife (Mohs hardness of 3).
