About the Artist: Joy Bassett (1911 – ?)
This piece is a true piece of local art history. Joy Bassett was a remarkable woman whose fierce determination captured the hearts of Toronto and Maynooth, Ontario.
The Art School Dreamer: Born in China to missionary parents, Joy survived the London Blitz during WWII before moving to Canada in 1961. In 1981, at the age of 70, she wore her grandchildren's blue jeans to take the entrance exam for the prestigious Ontario College of Art. When a skeptical professor asked what she was doing there, she famously replied: "You have a little old lady with a dream. Is there anything wrong with that?" She passed with flying colors.
The Log Cabin Artist: After moving out of Toronto due to her health, she lived a fiercely independent life in a remote log cabin near Maynooth, Ontario. There, she cut her own firewood, drove winter roads in a 4-wheel-drive truck, and poured her love for nature into her watercolor paintings. Her works were highly sought after and sold quickly at local art shows.
