This pre-owned, vintage Soviet-era Latvian wood marquetry wall panel features a charming, detailed scene of an Old Town Rīga street, captured through beautiful inlaid wood craftsmanship. This unique piece of history is in good condition, showcasing the skill of traditional marquetry art, and would make a stunning addition to any wall collection.
- Up for auction is a beautiful, authentic piece of mid-century Baltic design history. This vintage wood marquetry wall art panel features a highly detailed, hand-cut street scene of historic Old Town Rīga, Latvia, at sunset.
Marquetry is the intricate art of fitting together incredibly thin layers of different colored natural wood veneers like a puzzle. No paint was used to create this image—the sky, old buildings, shadows, and vintage street lamp are entirely formed by the natural grain and textures of the wood. The panel features slight beveled edges at the bottom and a smooth protective finish that beautifully catches the light.
The back of the panel features its original, intact round gold factory label. This sticker provides rare historical provenance, proving the item was made by the state-controlled Rīga Furniture Factory (Mēbeļu Firma Rīga) in Soviet-occupied Latvia. The label includes the official armchair logo, the product code (Artikuls 2/552), the "Made in USSR" stamp, and a handwritten original price of 35 Rubles (a premium luxury item for its era).A wonderful, well-preserved addition for collectors of Soviet-era souvenirs, mid-century modern design, or unique wood crafts.
