Antique Underwood Typewriter – Model 5 (1916) with Rare 18” Carriage
This machine is a Model 5, originally introduced in 1899, but equipped with the extra-large 18-inch carriage—a configuration known as No. 3-18. Models 3-18, 3-20, and 3-26 retained the 84-character layout of the standard Model 5 but included extended 18”, 20”, or 26” carriages for oversized documents and specialised office work.
This typewriter appears to be functional and mechanically sound—uncommon for a machine of this age. However, given that it is over 100 years old, it’s primarily a décor piece. (Serial number 43692 indicates a 1916 heritage.)
This example features such as a two-colour ribbon selector and backspace key (post-1909 design). The machine currently uses an all-black ribbon.
Whether displayed in a home, office, retail setting, or writer’s studio, it makes an exceptional conversation piece and a highly appealing item for collectors, designers, and enthusiasts of early technology.
