The large citrus fruit known locally as White Pomelo: 柚子 (yòuzi) 白柚 (báiyòu)"jambola" (or jambola citrus) aka the pomelo (scientifically Citrus maxima or Citrus grandis). Known as the largest citrus fruit in the world, white-fleshed varieties with a thick white spongy pith and pale segments are often specifically referred to as white pomelos or Ela Jambola.
Growing a pomelo (Citrus maxima) as an indoor container plant offers aesthetic beauty, fragrant seasonal blooms, and a touch of lush greenery, though indoor specimens rarely produce full-sized fruit. It acts as a natural air cleanser while boosting indoor mental well-being and aesthetics
Care
To care for an indoor pomelo plant, provide it with 6 to 8 hours of direct sunlight daily and water only when the top few centimetres of soil feel completely dry. Because the pomelo (Citrus maxima) is a tropical citrus tree, it requires high light, stable warmth, and controlled humidity to survive inside a home.
Core Environmental Needs
Full Direct Sun ➔ Drench-and-Dry Watering ➔ High Humidity ➔ Warm Microclimate
Full Direct Sun: Place your pomelo in the absolute brightest spot available, ideally a south-facing window. If your home lacks intense natural light, you must supplement it with a high-output LED grow light for 12 to 14 hours a day to prevent leaf drop.Drench-and-Dry Watering: Water the soil thoroughly until water drains freely from the bottom holes. Allow the top 5 centimetres of soil to dry out completely before watering again. Citrus roots are highly susceptible to rot if kept constantly soggy.High Humidity: Pomelos prefer a relative humidity level above 50%. Boost ambient moisture by placing a humidification tray (a tray filled with pebbles and water) beneath the pot or running a small humidifier nearby.
Warm Microclimate: Maintain a consistent room temperature between 18°C and 29°C. Protect the tree from cold drafts, window panes during winter, and drying forced-air heating vents.
Seasonal Nutrition & SoilCitrus Fertilizer: Feed your pomelo every 4 to 6 weeks during the active spring and summer growing season. Use a high-nitrogen fertilizer formulated specifically for citrus, such as those available from Miracle-Gro or local garden centers like Sheridan Nurseries. Stop feeding entirely during the winter.
Acidic, Well-Draining Soil: Ensure the tree is potted in a lightweight, chunky mix. A combination of standard potting soil, perlite, and orchid bark works perfectly to keep the soil slightly acidic and highly porous.
Routine Maintenance & PruningLeaf Dusting: Wipe the large, glossy leaves with a damp cloth every two weeks. Removing household dust maximizes the plant's ability to photosynthesize under indoor conditions.
Size Control: Prune your indoor pomelo in early spring before new growth starts. Clip back overly long branches just above a leaf node to maintain a compact, bushy shape suitable for your indoor space
Plant the houseplant in a container with drainage holes using a potting mix tailored to its specific species. Matching the correct soil, pot size, and planting depth ensures the root system establishes without rotting.
