Vt Etching “Montreal from the Lookout” Cdn Ernst Neumann 🐞

Vintage etching titled “Montreal from the Lookout” by the Canadian artist Ernst Neumann. Signed in pencil by the artist to the bottom right. Circa 1941. Ernst Neumann (1907-1956) was born in Budapest, Hungary in 1907. He emigrated to Montreal, Quebec Canada with his family at age 5. Ernst became a member of the Society of Canadian Painters, Etchers and Engravers. He exhibited at the Royal Canadian Academy and the Art Association of Montreal. Ernst Neumann is represented in the National Gallery of Canada with nineteen etchings, engravings and oil paintings. He was awarded a government overseas fellowship by the Royal Society of Canada in 1955 to study in France and during that time while in Venice he passed away of a heart attack in his 48th year in 1956. This etching depicts a panoramic view of the city of Montreal from a high vantage point, often understood to be Mount Royal. This piece was created in 1941 and is a black and white etching on paper. Neumann was a key figure in the “Jewish Painters of Montreal” collective and was celebrated for capturing the daily life, streets, and social realism of the city. His works continue to be popular and sought after. Good condition considering the age. Was professionally framed and matted many years ago. Age marks on the matte and wear to the wood frame commensurates with the age. Art is approximately 12.5” wide and 9 3/4” long. Frame is approximately 20” wide and 18 1/3” long.
