Hand-Carved Elongated Tribal Wall Mask (Signed CH. ST-FELIX)

Vintage Haitian Folk Art – Hand-Carved Elongated Tribal Wall Mask (Signed CH. ST-FELIX) Vintage 24.5” Hand-Carved Wooden Tribal Mask – Signed CH. ST-FELIX – Mid-Century Haitian Folk Art Item Description Up for auction is a striking, vintage hand-carved wooden tribal mask designed as a decorative wall plaque. Standing at an impressive 24.5 inches tall, this piece features an elegant, elongated composition that beautifully blends West African formal motifs with mid-century geometric styling. Crafted from a single solid piece of rich, dark-stained native hardwood, the mask showcases beautiful natural grain variations. The front features stylized hollowed-out slit eyes, a sharp, prominent vertical nose bridge, fine grooved geometric detailing along the cheeks, and full, raised lips. The reverse clearly exhibits authentic hand-chiseling marks from traditional artisan tools. • Artist Signature: Hand-incised "CH. ST-FELIX" on the interior rim. • Dimensions: 24.5" Length x 4.5" Width x 2" Depth • Material: Solid Hardwood (Dark Stain Finish) • Condition: Excellent vintage condition. The wood retains a beautiful, deep polished luster. There are no major structural cracks, deep splits, or repairs. Minor age-appropriate wear to the finish adds to its authentic rustic character. • Mounting: Easily displayed on a wall by threading wire/twine through the eye slits or adding a small D-ring hanger to the interior top. Artist & Cultural Provenance The crisp hallmark "CH. ST-FELIX" identifies this piece as an authentic product of the celebrated St. Felix artisan workshop lineage, central to the mid-20th-century artistic renaissance in Haiti. The St. Felix family of sculptors—most notably master carver Maxi St. Felix (who trained under the legendary Haitian academician Ludovic Booz)—became highly renowned between the 1960s and 1980s for elevating regional carving traditions into sought-after modernist art. Pieces coming out of this collective are distinguished by their structural, architectural line work and smooth finishes, bridging the gap between traditional Afro-Caribbean spiritual forms and European mid-century modern aesthetics. Unlike generic, unmarked souvenirs, this signed piece represents a documented slice of Caribbean folk-art history, making it an excellent addition for collectors of ethnic sculpture, primitive art, or global bohemian home decor Nearest intersection Yonge Street and Stelees Avenue
