Antique J&J Kohn Bentwood Parlor Chair Toronto Label 1952
$250
Antique J. & J. Kohn Bentwood Parlor Chair – Toronto Label & 1952 Tag
Description
An authentic, early 20th-century antique bentwood parlor side chair manufactured by the renowned Austrian firm Jacob & Josef Kohn. This model features a distinct low-profile, short-seat height design, characteristic of period vanity, bedroom, or accent parlor seating. It is constructed from structurally sound, steam-bent beechwood with a classic rounded oval "medallion" backrest.
The underside of the seat frame retains its highly coveted, original partial paper label from the company’s Canadian distribution arm, reading "J. & J. KOHN and MUN... TORONTO". Adding to its unique provenance, the frame features an original metal tracking tag stamped "CF 1952", indicating the exact year this antique was officially inventoried into a Canadian institution or estate. The frame retains Kohn’s signature patented metal heavy-duty reinforcement corner brackets and exposed screw joints.
Condition
• Frame: Excellent, solid structural condition. The beechwood has a beautiful age-appropriate patina and tight joinery with no cracks or breaks to the bentwood supports.
• Upholstery: A modern addition. The chair has been reupholstered over the original seat and back medallion with a thick, floral tapestry-pattern fabric using exposed modern steel staples. It is ready to use as a functional accent piece as is, or serves as an excellent candidate for a historical restoration back to its original profile.
