How to Grow Castor Bean (Carmencita & New Zealand Purple):
☀️ Light: Full sun is essential for best colour and fastest growth.
🌡️ When to Plant: Start indoors 4–6 weeks before last frost. Transplant outdoors only when nights stay reliably warm.
🌱 Starting Seeds: Lightly nick or soak seeds overnight to speed germination. Plant 1–1.5 cm deep in warm soil. Germination usually 7–21 days.
🌿 Transplanting: Space plants 3–4 feet apart—they get big. Choose rich, well-drained soil. Add compost for maximum growth.
💧 Water: Keep evenly moist during establishment. Once established, they’re surprisingly drought-tolerant.
🌳 Growth Habit: Can reach 5–10 feet in a single season in Ontario’s warm summers. Carmencita produces striking red seed clusters; New Zealand Purple maintains deep purple foliage.
⚠️ Safety Note: Castor bean seeds and plant parts are toxic if ingested. Grow responsibly—great for ornamental use.
