Jackson Beardy (1944-1984) was born on the Garden Hill Reserve at Island Lake, Manitoba, as the fifth of thirteen children. He was raised primarily by his maternal Grandmother from whom he learned traditional Ojibwe and Cree oral histories and legends. He was sent to the Portage La Prairie residential school at age seven. He was forced to learn English and suffered severe cultural alienation, yet he discovered his passion for drawing and painting. He was a core member of the Woodland School of Art and a founding member of the Professional Native Indian Artists Inc., famously known as the “Indian Group of Seven.” He co-created the groundbreaking 1972 Winnipeg Art Gallery exhibition “Treaty Numbers 23, 287, 1171, which demanded that Indigenous artwork be evaluated for its aesthetic, rather than purely anthropological value. He served as a Senior Arts Advisor for the Canadian Federal Government where he established the “Indian Fine Arts Guide” to properly govern how institutions acquire Indigenous art. His works can be found in many art galleries and private collections.
